Shildon bow out of the Vase

Shildon AFC’s chance of major silverware in the F.A. Vase came to an end on Wednesday 17th December when they were well beaten 3 – 2 in the 3rd Round by Shaw Lane Aquaforce at Barnsley’s Oakwell ground. Shildon got off to a perfect start taking the lead after just 90 seconds when Ben Wood headed home.

Shildon nearly went 2 – 0 up with a good shot from Billy Greulich-Smith but the keeper punched the ball away. Shaw Lane levelled on 25 minutes when a corner was headed in by the unmarked Steff Holt. Shildon then had a good goal disallowed for off side when Darren Richardson put the ball through the keeper’s legs.

Shildon went behind on 45 minutes when a corner ball was cleared to Steff Holt who fired in from the edge of the box for his 2nd goal of the night.

In the 2nd half Shaw Lane took control outplaying the Railwaymen, and their superiority paid off on 65 minutes when a free kick from 20 yards out by Shane Lane took a deflection past keeper Kyle Hayes. Afterwards, the Northern Counties East League side hardly allowed Shildon many chances until the 89th minute when a long through pass found Micky Rae, who floated the ball over the advancing keeper for Shildon’s 2nd goal. Too little too late. Final Score: Shaw Lane Aquaforce 3 Shildon AFC 2. On the night Shildon were beaten by a far better side.
