It all started after a Shildon resident approached the Community Hub with, as he calls it, “a rather selfish act.”
Steven Davidson told The Crier: “After a debilitating illness saw my health deteriorate, I found myself partially disabled and unable to do many of the things I previously took for granted – like my passion for fishing.
“I’ve fished since my brother-in-law taught me at 18 years old and would love to get back into it.
“I spoke about my frustrations to Lauren at Shildon Alive and how fishing helps my mental health and just gets me out enjoying nature.”
The chat sparked an idea that highlighted how the sport could help others suffering from isolation and mental health issues.
Between them they approached Eden Grange Fisheries, who confirmed it had accessible areas that could be used.
Lauren Robinson from Shildon Alive praised Steven for having the courage to come forward and approach the hub for help.
She said: “I’m in the process of applying for funding to cover any costs, that include transport and bits of basic equipment but I need to gain interest from the local public.
“We would love to get this important group up and running and feel it could benefit a lot of people.”
