To mark the 100th Anniversary of the unveiling of the town’s War Memorial, Ferryhill Town Council will be hosting a short memorial service at 10.45am on Saturday, 1 February in the Town Hall garden.
Originally unveiled by Brigadier General H C Surtees on 31 January 1925, the War Memorial (right) comprises a statue of a Durham Light Infantry soldier resting on his rifle, standing on a plinth inscribed with the names of the soldiers commemorated.
Town Mayor, Cllr Carole Atkinson will commence the proceedings, which will be followed by a service and prayers by Rev’d Christopher Humble representing the Methodist Church.
At the end of the service, Andrew Potts from Ferryhill Town Band will play the Last Post.
Mayor Atkinson said: ‘It will be an honour to take part in the 100th anniversary service of Ferryhill’s War Memorial.
“The memorial is an important part of the town’s history, which acknowledges the great sacrifice made by Ferryhill’s war heroes.
We hope you can join us to commemorate this landmark occasion.”
