Sedgefield Water Polo Club U16s travelled to Maltby Leisure Centre, Rotherham recently to play their away league fixture against local rivals, Rotherham Metro and served up a comprehensive 6-26 thrashing.
The game got off to a flying start with a goal from Thomas just 18 seconds after the starting whistle. This was followed by a goal from Tyler within a minute, and a second from Thomas just 20 seconds later. The opposition fought back and scored a goal which was then followed by two exclusions in close succession. Gregor, Finley and Kyle then added their names to the score sheet, followed by a third from Thomas and second goals from Kyle and Finley leaving the score at 1-8 by the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Rotherham showed some fighting spirit to claw the score back to 6-12 by the end of the first half. After a team talk by coach Ben, Sedgefield’s youngsters were determined to continue playing the game to the best of their ability as they wanted a good goal difference which would help in the league table. Goalie Aston took a risk with a long shot and scored – something which rarely happens in water polo – and the balcony erupted. This was followed by a penalty from Iesha. The team then focused on defence, closing out Rotherham for the entire quarter, but still managed to find the net themselves another 8 times.
Six more goals came in the final quarter, again to no reply, for a comfortable 6-26 win. A special mention also to Bram, who despite being a goalkeeper, played outfield for the duration of the match.
