The Bay Horse pub in Fore Bondgate, Bishop Auckland, recently held its second annual Dog Day to support the RSPCA and local animal charity NASSL.
Organised by landlady Zara Lawlor, the event managed to raise £220 to help animals in need.
The event drew crowds of dog lovers for a day of agility challenges, fun competitions, and plenty of canine treats.
Prize winners included Ted (Best Coat & Markings, Scruffiest, and Golden Oldie), Honey (Youngest Puppy and Waggiest Tail), Hendrix (Most Handsome), Bobbi (Prettiest Bitch), Taxi (Most Like Their Owner), Marley (Best Treat Catcher), and Duke (Best Agility).
Founded in 1993, NASSL is an award-winning animal charity based in Hunwick.
In addition to caring for dogs, cats, and other small animals, NASSL works closely with the women’s refuge and social services, stepping in to care for pets in emergencies.
The charity also runs a low-cost spaying and neutering scheme, helping families on low incomes meet the costs of responsible pet care.
The RSPCA has been a voice for animals since 1824.
For over two centuries, the organisation has worked tirelessly to change minds, influence laws, improve industries, and transform lives — creating a better world for both animals and people.
Speaking about the event, Zara Lawlor said: “NASSL and the RSPCA do such incredible work, and it’s an honour to support them.
“I’m proud that we raised over £200 at this year’s Dog Day.
“A huge thank you to everyone who attended and donated, the Auckland Project for letting us use their car park for the agility course, and Simon the Butchers for generously providing dog bone treats.
“The turnout was fantastic, and it was such fun seeing all those wagging tails in one place!”
Christine Percival from NASSL, who acted as head judge on the day, also expressed her thanks to everyone, saying: “It was wonderful to see so many people and their dogs come together to support our work.
“Every pound raised will help us care for animals in need, from providing shelter and medical treatment to stepping in during emergencies.
“We’re so grateful to Zara and The Bay Horse team for raising awareness and making the day such a success.”
