Timothy Hackworth Primary School enjoyed a dress-up day on Friday 27 June to begin their very own celebrations marking Shildon’s major role in the bicentenary of the railways.
The children took part in many different activities and to finish the day, some members of the school came together in an assembly.
They enjoyed singing a famous song which was written and performed in 1975. This is called Iron Road and celebrates the railways.
The day was a huge success and the pupils even had their very own Timothy Hackworth for the day.
As well as the day in school, Year 5 representatives were invited to Shildon Railway Institute for an exclusive preview of the exhibition, by special appointment, with the Lord Lieutenant of County Durham, Sue Snowdon, officially opening the exhibition.
The fantastic ambassadors also presented Sue with some very special flowers. The school are proud to say that Evie even knew the significance of the flowers!
Some of the pupils shared their thoughts on their visit to the exhibition.
Willow said: “The people who showed us around were kind and knew lots of facts.”
Daisy added: “I found out about some of my relatives and the jobs they did.”
And Ellie said: “It was fascinating to see some photographs of our school and ex-pupils from the past.”
