Nestled along historic Fore Bondgate in Bishop Auckland, The Bay Horse is one of the oldest pubs in County Durham, writes Yvonne Hawkey. Dating back to 1530, the site was once an inn with stables, and now this friendly local pub, has undergone a transformation whilst preserving its welcoming down-to-earth atmosphere.
Landlady Zara Lawlor has been running the bar for over four years and is renowned for her great hospitality. She started with her late husband Tom, who sadly passed away two years ago after battling with cancer. “I’m Scottish and Tom was Irish”, Zara says, recalling their dynamic relationship. “We were the best team in County Durham and a photo of him pulling his last pint still sits above the bar”. “We lived in Shildon, Stanhope and Durham City”, she adds, “but Bishop Auckland is where we laid our hat. I love the local community support, friendship, and loyalty here and I can’t imagine living and working anywhere else.”
While the building’s structure remains unchanged, a refurbishment has revitalised its appearance, featuring a brand new interior décor with a specially designed wallpaper telling Bishop Auckland’s rich history. There is also enhanced entertainment, upgraded AV systems and an increased selection of beers and ales.
Owned by the Dorbiere Pub Group, the Bay Horse is passionate about its beer, with an ever-changing selection of real ales and discounts for CAMRA members. “We are more than a pint; we believe in bringing people together through good times and great hospitality,” declares their website.
And with live sport screenings, darts, pool, live music, and a weekly pub quiz, you can’t argue with that!
“Dorbiere has made this happen”, acknowledges Zara. “We all work together as a team and we are truly grateful for their support and being appreciated.”
