Shildon AFC returned to the top of Northern League Division One on Tuesday night after a 2-0 home win over bottom club, Sunderland RCA.

Having started the weekend atop the table, a no-scoring draw at North Shields saw the Railwaymen slip down into fifth place by the end of the day. But maximum points in midweek maintained the club’s unbeaten start to the season and returned them to the head of the pack.

The side visited North Sheilds on Saturday, who followed the Railwaymen back into the Northen League, albeit for different reasons having failed their ground grading assessment. The match proved hard fought in a swirling wind and the home side could have secured all three points had a first half ‘goalscorer’ not strayed offside, or a second half header not rebounded off the upright.

Manager Chris Hughes was happy to return to Dean Street with a point given the conditions and prepare for the visit of Sunderland RCA. The clubs have provided some high-scoring shows in the past, but with the Ryhope side struggling over the past couple of seasons, this one proved more comfortable for the Railwaymen.

A tap in from Andrei Ardelean (25) and an unstoppable 25-yard curler from Joe Postill (61) took care of the points ahead of Saturday’s second visit to West Auckland in as many weeks, this time on FA Cup duty.
