Recent promising performances by Shildon Railway Cricket Club came to an abrupt end last weekend when the senior sides suffered three crushing defeats.
Firstly, on Friday night, The Locos, “the boys in pink”, lost their F15 home tie against Durham City in front of a big home crowd.
Poor batting saw The Locos fail to reach City’s modest total of 105 and now even a win in the final match of the competition, on Friday, at Crook, will not see Shildon progress to the final stages.
On Saturday, both senior sides were weakened by the absence of several key players and the 1st XI crumbled to 88 all out at Whiteleas, where only opener John Paul Nash (32) put up any real resistance to the Seasiders bowling attack and the home side cruised to a seven wicket win.
At the Sportsfield, the 2nd XI also batted poorly, being all out for 112 and the opposition reached their target for the loss of four wickets. This Saturday the first team visit fourth placed Castle Eden.
The second team will be at home in the reverse league fixture. The Under 15s on Monday and Under 13s on Wednesday will both be in action in their respective cup competitions but at this point the draw is yet to be made.
The club is looking to raise money towards the costs of essential remedial work to the ground which must be carried out at the start of September.
Unfortunately, an accidental over generous application of weed killer has ruined the playing surface, both on the square and outfield.
“It’s a huge job and will cost in excess of £4,500, but we have no choice in the matter. The work must be done if the ground is to recover in time for us to play cricket next year,” club chairman John Brennan told the Crier, adding “ every penny helps and any contribution will be most gratefully received.”
