As part of preparations for their Annual Spring Fair on Saturday 4 April, the Railway Institute is once again inviting people of all ages from across the community to take part in its Spring Competitions.
Now in their second year, the competitions celebrate traditional crafts and seasonal creativity associated with Easter and the springtime. This year there are six different categories, with something designed to appeal to a wide range of ages and interests.
A volunteer from the Institute explained the inspiration behind the contests.
“Fun competitions like this are as traditionally British in springtime as fish and chips or bright red post boxes are all year round. Last year was the first time we’d tried it, and we were amazed by how many people brought along their entries. People of all ages took part and together created a lovely display of craft and creativity that really captured the spirit of the season.
“It inspired us to do it again this year. We learned a lot from the first attempt and are hoping to make it even better. Our aim is for there to be a way for almost anyone to take part, so most of the categories are open to all ages, although age is taken into account when entries are judged.”
This year a new category has been added to the range offered last year. Alongside competitions for a dyed egg, a painted egg, a colouring-in sheet, an Easter bonnet and a Victoria sponge cake, organisers are also inviting entries for a short poem on the theme of spring. Poems must be no longer than sixteen lines.
“It occurred to us after last year’s Spring Fair that all the competitions involved making something with your hands,” the volunteer said. “We hadn’t included anything for people who enjoy working with words and ideas. A short poem felt like a lovely addition. It’s something anyone can have a go at with just a little time and imagination, and it doesn’t cost anything to enter. We’re really looking forward to seeing what both budding and experienced poets might come up with.”

Entry to all competition categories is free of charge, as is entry to the Spring Fair itself, where judging will take place and the winners will be announced on 4 April.
