At SecuriCorp Park, visitors Darlington won the toss and put home side Shildon Railway into bat in the North Yorks. & South Durham Premier Cricket League Division 2 game, reports John Brennan.
In cool, overcast and blustery conditions, the Railwaymen struggled from the start, as wickets fell at frequent intervals and scoring runs proved difficult. Soon the innings was reduced to 22 for 3 and then 44 for 5 before finally limping along to a total of 113 all out in the 39th over.
Six batsmen made double figures with Joe Knowles top scorer on 21. In reply, the Quakers took full advantage of Shildon’s poor performance and eased to victory in the 24th over for the loss of two wickets, both taken by Joe Knowles. This loss effectively puts Shildon out of the promotion battle, so the side will have to look to reset and pick up better results over the final weeks of the season.
Meanwhile Shildon’s 2nd team game at Northallerton was conceded by the Yorkshire side, giving the Railwaymen 20 easy points and keeping them in second place in Division C of the Darlington District Cricket League.
As the Crier goes to press, the 2nd team is due to play Haughton in the final of the F B Howell Trophy at Cockerton, hoping to add a second piece of silverware to join the Division C Cup, won earlier in the season.
On Saturday, the first team travels to Maltby for its next league game, whilst the second team entertains Northallerton at Securicorp Park. Recently, the Yorkshire side has struggled to turn out a team and has had to concede matches, so Shildon will be hoping that Northallerton finds some extra players to avoid being without a game again.
