Police Praise Stores For Adhering To Challenge 21 Scheme

A police test has proven that shops in the town are becoming much more vigilant when serving alcohol to customers, with most stores refusing to serve those without ID.

St Helen’s Newsagents was the only shop to fail the operation and received an £80 fine. Ali’s Store, Gill’s, Tindale News, JN News and the Lateshopper all refused service to the 16 year-old, good news for the owners as they failed last time round.

Beaumont’s and Simply Drinks were shown to be the most rigorous when it comes to asking for I.D., refusing sales on both operations.

Anne-Marie Gray, of Bishop Auckland Police, said, “We were very pleased with the successful outcome of [the] operation. Lessons are being learnt and shops are utilising the Challenge 21 scheme.
