Pedal power will be coming to Bishop Auckland next month when a series of cycle races takes place in the town. The Bishop Auckland Cycle Race is being held on Wednesday 6th August and will feature separate events for youth, amateur and professional cyclists. People in the town are being encouraged to go along to watch the races and help cheer the competitors on.
The races follow an 850m closed-road circuit in the town centre along Fore Bondgate, Finkle Street, North Bondgate and Market Place. The event is being organised by Middlesbrough-based cycling organisation Velo29 Events and is supported by Durham County Council and Bishop Auckland Town Council. Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Partnership has also provided funding for the event through Cllr Sam Zair’s neighbourhood budget.
Richard Williamson, of Velo29 Events, said, “The races will include three categories – youth, amateur and the professional elite cyclists from across the country – so people will have a chance to see competitors at all levels.”
Cyclists can still sign up to take part in the event at www.velo29events.com. People are asked to register in advance but if places are still available entries will be accepted on the day.
The timetable for the event is as follows: 5.30pm to 6.15pm, youth racing – ages six to 16.
6.45pm to 7.45pm, amateur racing – local riders, juniors aged 16 to 18 and female competitors aged 16 and older.
8pm to 9.15pm, professional/elite amateur racing – the top riders from across the country.
