Ferryhill History Society is planning to hold a talk in Ferryhill Station Club on Wednesday 25 January at 7.30pm.
The talk is entitled: Sailing to Saint Helena. The adventures of Dr. John Stokoe, R.N. – Nelson’s Surgeon, Napoleon’s Confidante.
It is a story of how a doctor, born in Ferryhill in 1775, served in the Royal Navy, including at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, and attended Napoleon as a doctor, whilst Napoleon was in exile on Saint Helena in 1819.
In later life he travelled to America, before retiring to live in Durham City. Talk admission is £2 for adults. Students under 18 years of age and children are free.
