A team of Durham Constabulary officers is committed to displaying its mettle to tackle thefts across the area.
Based at Bishop Auckland, the six officers comprise a special unit set up under the banner of Operation Hansel – the name of an ongoing campaign to combat the growing problem of scrap metal thefts across the force area.
“Thefts of metal and lead have been an increasing problem for some time. We believe that some victims consider what has been stolen to be scrap metal and, therefore, worthless. However, we want them
to know this type of theft will not be tolerated and incidents reported will be investigated,” said PCSO Sherry Kenyon.
PCSO Kenyon said that in addition to tracking down those responsible for scrap metal thefts, the team will be focusing on giving advice on crime prevention including target hardening.
