At the Annual Council Meeting held on Wednesday 22nd May, councillors elected Cllr Angus Ferguson to serve as Mayor of Ferryhill for the municipal year 2025/26.
Previous Mayor, Cllr Carole Atkinson was elected as Deputy Mayor.
After being elected, Cllr Ferguson thanked the outgoing Mayor for her hard work over the past year: “First and most importantly, I love Ferryhill and have felt welcome from the moment my partner and I arrived in 2022,” he said.
“I want to help make Ferryhill proud of itself again and work hard to draw together what, like in many towns, is becoming a divided community.
“To that end, I intend to support some existing community groups in whatever way possible and also bring new ideas for groups and activities.
“We live in a fantastic town with a rich history which we need to embrace, make a virtue of and, if possible, exploit for the good of our town and its people”.
Before moving to Ferryhill, Cllr Ferguson lived in Bishop Auckland and before that, Tyneside, where he worked for 17 years in school welfare.
He was born on the Wirral, to a Liverpudlian family. His parents were both in the army in WWII, his father in India and his mother at home and then in France after D-Day beforet on to have an army career serving for 22 years.
His father was a steelworker and struggled after his industry was decimated in the 1980’s.
Cllr Ferguson is an avid reader of history, science, crime fiction and like a previous mayor, an Evertonian.
The Mayor is currently considering which charities to support during his term in office and as soon as he reaches a decision, this will be announced along with details of fundraising events.
