Shildon Railway Cricket Club’s senior sides will commence life in the newly formed Durham Cricket League on Saturday when Horden will be the first visitors to the Sportsfield to play the 2nd team fixture.
The 1st XI will travel to Horden and face former player Paul Jenkins who has played for the former Senior League side for the past three seasons.
Skipper Greg Upton remains upbeat despite the fact that the team will not be at full strength, as two players are away at university and Michael Lumley is still recovering from knee surgery and will miss the start of the season.
Second XI skipper Andy Paterson is eager to get a blend of youngsters and experienced players together regularly in the side with the aim of “bringing on” the younger ones.
Vice captains Martin Ferguson (1st team) and Liam Horner (2nd team) will have important roles in giving vital support and leading the teams this year.
The game starts at 1.30pm and the club hopes that people in the town will come along and support the teams.
Junior fixtures commence next week with the Under 15s at Bishop Auckland on Monday evening and the Under 13s at Mainsforth on Wednesday.
