Motorists urged to reduce their speed

fed-exMiddridge Parish Council are imploring drivers to reduce their speed after a collision just outside of the village.

The incident occurred on Sunday 7th September when a car was waiting to turn right at the allotments and was hit from behind by a van which failed to stop in time.

Both police and ambulance crews attended the scene, and the driver of the car was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital where he was treated for shock and neck injuries.

A spokesperson for Middridge Parish Council commented, “We have continuously asked the County Council over many years to have the speed limit reduced to 40mph on both sides of the village. These two sections of roads feature sharp bends and blind hills, whilst being heavily used by pedestrians and cyclists. Many people cycle to the allotment and we could have had a fatality if someone on a bicycle was waiting to turn right.

“There is no road sign indicating that there is a right turn ahead into the allotments.

“Speeding is the Middridge Parish Council PACT priority and we feel this needs to be addressed both through the village and on the surrounding approaches.”
