It was three of the best for Moors on Tuesday night at The Brewery Field as Alfreton Town were beaten by Graeme Lee’s in-form side, reports Noah Betts.
Moors made it a league double over the visitors courtesy of goals from Corey McKeown, Callum Ross and Glen Taylor on a freezing cold night in County Durham.
Lee’s men struck first through McKeown’s low driven effort, before Ross doubled the advantage just five minutes later, while Taylor got his 201st goal for the club as he tucked home at the far post in the second half.
While only 40 travelling Moors fans saw the captain’s 200th goal for the club in the 0-2 away win at Hereford, over 1,000 of The Brewery Field faithful were there to witness his 201st.
The big number 9 tapped home after a high ball into the box from McKeown floated over Askew’s head and into the path of Taylor, who was there at the back post to grab his side’s third of the evening.
Alfreton pulled a goal back through George Cantrill, but the mountain was too steep to climb, and Moors leapfrogged them into 12th in the National League North table.
The win extended Moors unbeaten run to four games after away victories at Southport and Hereford and that dramatic FA Trophy penalty shootout win at home against Boston United.
Prior to Tuesday night’s game, the previous two scheduled fixtures, at home against Radcliffe and Warrington, were both postponed due to a waterlogged pitch after heavy and sustained rainfall.
It has since been confirmed the Radcliffe fixture will now take place on Tuesday 25 March at 7.45pm.
For now, however, the focus for Graeme Lee’s men shifts to a huge away test at Kidderminster Harriers this weekend.
Harriers currently occupy the final playoff place, ten points ahead of Moors having played one game more.
And while Moors are enjoying a winning run, the weekend’s hosts have won just one of their last seven, including a midweek 3-1 defeat at lowly Marine, who Moors will host at The Brewery Field this midweek.
That game will be followed on Saturday 1 March by the FA Trophy quarter-final tie at the National League’s Sutton United.
With segregation in place for the game, fans of both teams are able to buy their tickets in advance via Sutton’s online ticket portal by visiting the club’s website.
Meanwhile, Graeme Lee has significantly strengthened his squad for the run-in after clinching a deal to bring defender Ben Pollock back to The Brewery Field.
Moors have agreed an undisclosed fee with fellow National League North outfit Chester for the dependable centre-back who returns to the club on a permanent deal.
Speaking to Moors TV, Pollock revealed the deal had been in the works for some time: “I told a few of the lads I’d be joining,” he said, “so it’s brilliant to get it over the line and I’m buzzing to be back and hopefully I’ll get playing football soon.”
