At November’s Town Council meeting, the Mayor, Councillor Shirley Quinn, presented Mrs Gillian Clarkson with her well deserved Mayor’s award for November, joining a list of very special Shildon people.
Gillian’s husband Alan was keen for Gillian to be nominated in recognition for her kind, caring and determined outlook to help others.
Gillian has raised several thousands of pounds for charities close to her heart including the Lullaby Trust, Pancreatic cancer, Macmillan Cancer Support, Butterwick Hospice, Versus Arthritis, Shildon AFC and many more.
Her fundraising has included a virtual walk to Portugal which holds fond memories, organised social nights in Sunnydale Leisure Centre, Shildon Football Club and the Railway Institute.
Gillian is always happy to help others and recently befriended a couple who collect their prescriptions from a local pharmacy which Gillian works at. During lockdown, they were unable to visit the pharmacy and Gillian delivered their prescriptions and always found time for a chat.
Sadly, the lady passed away, but Gillian continues to visit weekly, chatting and keeping her husband company as his family do not live locally.
Mayor Quinn said; “Congratulations Gillian, you are a worthy award winner, loved by so many for all the kind acts you do.”
The final word comes from Gillian’s mam, June, who said that she regards Gillian as her best friend and could not cope without everything she and Alan do for her.
