Every year Chilton’s local town Mayor chooses their charity by hosting several events and activities that take place during their time in office, writes Sue Reece.
Benefactors have included the Air Ambulance. Last year Cllr Malpas raised over £2,000 to support them as one of her chosen charities.
We have also had fundraising for the installation of the defibrillator on Hutton House and what we would now call a crowdfunding shout for our impressive Chilton War Memorial.
This year’s Mayor, Cllr Stuart Sutherland, has once again looked to support local charities. He said: “Rather than support a single charity, I will support local causes through the civic year by fundraising and also seeking to support local volunteering.”
One such charity is the Chilton Academy Allotment Garden.
The development of an outdoor learning space was initiated in 2023 with the generous support of the local community, Friends of Chilton Academy, Chilton Town Council, Chilton Junior Council and Chilton Green Energy Foundation and is designed to be an available and accessible space to be used by the wider Chilton community.
As well as promoting biodiversity, supporting health and wellbeing, it provides practical skills on how to garden and grow local produce. There is still work to do to for the garden to achieve its full potential and Stuart will continue to raise funds to support it.
A big thank you to everyone who attended his first coffee morning, held last Saturday in Hutton House, and generously donated £108 as well as taste testing carrot cake and cupcakes.
