Local teenager is captain of Newcastle team

Shildon teenager, Nathaniel Kitching has been selected as captain of Newcastle Thunder’s Rugby League Academy team.

Nathaniel, who plays for Durham Tigers, who are based at Sunnydale Leisure Centre in Shildon, was selected from 46 players to make a squad of 20, who will go on to play against Super League teams such as Salford Red Devils and London Broncos.

Nathaniel would like to thank his sponsors, Byerley Road Pre-School and Garnetts coaches, for helping him to buy his kit as well as everyone at Durham Tigers for getting him to where he is today.

Nathaniel would also like to encourage all local people to get involved in rugby league as it is great exercise combined with lots of fun.

The newly-made captain added: “You also make great friends, as rugby is one big family.”

Anyone with an interest in playing for Durham Tigers can attend sessions on Saturday mornings from 10am to 11.30am.
