Local Labour party activists launched their European Election campaign in Shildon on Saturday 8th March, joined by Shildon MP Helen Goodman and Jayne Shotton, one of Labour’s MEP candidates. Jayne, who used to work in a call centre, now represents shop workers and says she understands how the cost of living crisis is affecting families in the North East. Jayne is standing for election because she feels strongly that we need more representatives who have firsthand experience of working life and the difficulties families and workers face.
Helen Goodman said, “The Tories and Liberal Democrats claim hardworking families in Britain are better off. The truth is that families in Shildon are £1,600 a year worse off under David Cameron.”
Jayne Shotton, said, “Only Labour can make Britain better off by standing up to the energy companies, to the banks, and fighting for the NHS. Recent events in the European Parliament have shown that only Labour MEPs are prepared to fight for European wide banking reforms and action against tax dodgers. “Legislation from Europe benefits the lives of us in the North East on a daily basis, from having safer cleaner beaches for our children to play on, cheaper mobile phone charges when working or visiting abroad, free medical care anywhere in Europe to having safer fairer more equal workplaces. It is important that we do not lose these benefits.”
