Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon, will be taking part in the education project ‘Lindisfarne Gospels and Beyond’ from 1st July to 2nd September, 2013.
The Lindisfarne Gospels book is one of the greatest landmarks of human cultural achievement.
Created by the community of St Cuthbert just over 1000 years ago on Lindisfarne, it is one of the best examples of creativity and craftsmanship from medieval times. The Gospels show how – in Anglo Saxon times – pictures helped tell the stories of the day.
A spokesperson for the museum said, “Help us tell stories about inventions and discoveries over the past 1000 years at Locomotion. Come along and do your own ‘inventions and discoveries’ illustration.
“We aim to display over 1000 illustrations at the museum created by local children.
“Children from schools around the North East have already contributed over 350 illustrations. Can you help us reach 1000?”
The Lindisfarne Gospels Durham exhibition takes visitors on a journey of exploration, learning how and why this masterpiece was created, its influence on Medieval Europe and how artistic traditions from Britain and the Mediterranean mainland came together in North East England.
Lindisfarne Gospels Durham exhibition can be seen at Durham University’s Palace Green Library and will be open to the public from 1st July to 30th September, open from 10am till 10pm daily.
