‘Lights, Camera, Action,’ was the latest project embarked upon by the youth of Shildon Ignite recently.
Established as a relaunched ‘Youth Council’, Shildon Ignite meets monthly to give the youth of the town an opportunity to transform those things they care about.
Looking at the town through the lens of a camera gave an opportunity to bring into focus both the good and the bad. With forty cameras distributed the group were given categories to look at, photograph, and report back on.
With hundreds of pictures taken, the most relevant were selected by the group for inclusion in a booklet sponsored by Councillors Henry Nicholson and Trish Pemberton.
The pictures chosen included beautiful views of some of Shildon’s most iconic buildings, as well as views of boarded up shops and graffiti.
The young people were passionate about those landlords who allow their buildings to fall into disrepair blighting the whole community as well as those areas where hard work and commitment sees the town flourishing.
Youth worker Naomi Tomlinson commented, “These young people care about their town, they see it as a place worth caring about and believing in, and this project is the evidence.” Copies of the booklet are available from the Council Offices and a display of the pictures is to be launched in the Civic next week.
If any readers would like to donate to the work of the group they can contact Naomi on 01388 778998 for more information.
