Liberal Democrat Aaron Calder is celebrating after winning the November 27th by-election for Spennymoor Town Council.
The Spennymoor ward by-election came about due to the resignation of Liss Owen who has relocated to Scotland due to a change in her personal circumstances.
It is believed that 19 year old Aaron is the youngest person ever to be elected to Spennymoor Town Council.
Aaron won with 537 votes ahead of the Labour Party’s Anita Lowther who polled 167 votes.
Anita had previously served as a Spennymoor ward Town Councillor for four years from 2021 until May this year.
Aaron spoke with pride after the result was announced, “I’m honoured and humbled to have been elected with 76% of the vote”.
“I’m keen to get started serving the town and would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who voted for me and supported me during the election campaign.”
Fellow Lib Dem Councillor Dean Ranyard said, “It was really disappointing to lose Liss Owen on the Town Council following her move out of the area and I’d like to thank her for her service.”
“I’m delighted Aaron has been elected as Liss’s replacement and I think it’s really encouraging to have a younger person on the Town Council who can bring a different perspective and help to reflect the views and voices of younger people in our community.”
