Thursday 2nd May saw local and county council elections taking place across England and Wales, including the Shildon and district local and county elections.
In Shildon and Dene Valley it was a clean sweep for Labour in the county elections, as Henry Nicholson (1294 votes), Patricia Pemberton (1104) and Brian Stephens (1443)were all elected, with a turnout of 27.52%.
Labour also wrested control of Shildon Town Council away from the Independents and Lib Dems by securing a majority of seats.
Labour now controls the council with nine seats, while the Independents, with six and the Lib Dems, with two, make up the remaining eight.
It was also a clean sweep for labour in the Aycliffe North and Middridge Ward, as John Clare (985), Edward Dixon (884) and Joan Gray (988) were all duly elected, with a turnout of 21.38%.
In Eldon Parish, its three councillors, John Gibson, Diane Pennington and Rosemary Scaife were returned unopposed, as were Middridge’s five councillors, Anne Clarke, William Clarke, Harold Howe, Philip Makinson and Walter Mellor.
