King James I Academy has recently launched an exciting new Outreach opportunity for local primary pupils called Mini Medics. The programme is delivered by the Academy’s Health & Safety Officer and in-house First Aid Instructor, Jonathan Page.
The Nuco Training Mini Medics courses introduce first aid and mental health to young children via a network of trained individuals in UK schools. As a qualified instructor, Jonathan is well placed to deliver the training to local primary schools in the Bishop Auckland area.
Health education lessons are now compulsory in all state-funded schools in England and this includes basic first aid and mental health training. Mini Medics courses provide an excellent foundation for children to learn how to take care of their own mental and physical health, as well as giving them the basic skills to look out for the people around them.
Pupils from St Helen Auckland Community Primary School have already benefitted from the training, but most recently, pupils in Year 1 and Year 5 at St John’s C of E Primary School in Shildon have completed the Mini Medics course with Jonathan. As part of the programme, they successfully learned how to dress different types of wounds, deal with a variety of injuries including breaks and sprains, put someone into the recovery position, and even perform emergency CPR. Young children are extremely receptive to this type of training and King James is looking forward to delivering the programme to other local primary schools in the months ahead.
