Hannah Robinson, a young professional boxer born in Bishop Auckland, gave a talk recently about her fundraising climb of Mount Kilimanjaro last year with her partner, Mark Eager.
She is the granddaughter of David Appleton, a former President of the town’s Rotary Club.
Hannah and Mark decided they would raise money for Rotary Charities in David’s memory, by seeking sponsorship for their climb to the summit of Africa’s highest mountain. Their successful climb raised £1,500.
In April the intrepid pair delivered a superb slideshow and talk, outlining their exploits to members and friends of Bishop Auckland Rotary Club.
Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania stands 5,895 metres ( 19,341 feet ) and is the highest free-standing mountain in the world.
It’s a gruelling climb and altitude sickness had to be overcome as they progressed up the mountain.
After a week they reached their final camp and it was snowing!
In the early hours of the next day and in total darkness they set off and after several hours reached their goal.
“Was it worth the effort?” one Rotarian asked. Hannah and Mark responded with a resounding: “Yes – and Grandad was proudly looking down on us!”
