Shildon Railway Cricket Club celebrated its first piece of silverware for several seasons when the Under 13s won the Durham Cricket Board Champions Shield.
On 27th August the club hosted the final against Eppleton and an excellent all round performance saw Shildon run out as worthy winners.
Batting first, the home side reached 130 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. T.Teasedale(25), J.Aitken (30 retired) and T.Gillette (31 retired) were the main contributors to the innings.
The Shildon youngsters then kept a tight rein on their opponents and good fielding ensured that Eppleton’s batsmen made slow progress towards their target. C.Stout and C.Bloomer took two wickets each, as the Eppleton reply was restricted to 70 for 7 and the Railwaymen romped to a 60 run victory.
Club Chairman, John Brennan thanked the spectators for their support and praised the efforts and time given by club coaches John Young, Mal Dover and Chris Young before congratulating both sides on a game played in the best traditions of sportsmanship. The fixture secretary of the Durham Cricket League, Alan Stewart, then presented the trophy to Shildon captain, Tom Hallimond, to rousing applause.
