Jolly Holiday for Shildon’s children thanks to mystery Mary Poppins

Kind hearted 'Mary Poppins' has been delivering chocolate treats to the doorsteps of Shildon homes displaying NHS rainbows.

Children across Shildon have been delighted, and their parents’ hearts warmed, by the kindness of a ‘sweet’ stranger who has been leaving Easter treats on their doorsteps.

Dressed as beloved children’s character Mary Poppins, the kind-hearted stranger has been using her daily exercise time over the Easter weekend to walk the town’s streets and leave chocolate goodies at the doors of homes displaying the colourful NHS-supporting rainbows – presumably because these homes are more likely to have children living there.

Residents who were lucky enough to meet Ms Poppins on her travels say she told them she wanted to bring a little joy to the children of the town during lockdown as she, like grandparents up and down the nation, misses her own grandchildren dearly.

Many residents have since taken to Facebook to try and identify the generous stranger so they can thank her for her act of kindness.

One young resident, Evelyn Bennett, aged four, squealed with delight when she discovered the sweet treats on her doorstep on Easter Sunday morning.

Resident Jade Kemp said: “What an absolute angel our mystery Mary Poppins is, making lockdown Easter that little bit happier. She’s an absolute blessing to Shildon that’s for sure.”
