Join a new railway walk on Saturday

On Saturday 23rd July, as part of a programme of events to celebrate the arrival of the Flying Scotsman at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum in Shildon, the friends of the Stockton and Darlington Railway have arranged for two walks to take place.

Both will start and finish at the Timothy Hackworth end of the Locomotion Site.

They are being run in conjunction with Walk4Life, which is active in Shildon and encourages people to get out and walk to improve their health outcomes.

The first walk is a Shildon Circular Heritage Railway walk and was developed using Heritage Lottery funding.

It is one of a set of six that covers most of the length of the Stockton and Darlington Railway.

On Saturday, it will be subdivided into two parts, separated by a 30-minute coffee break in Shildon town centre so walkers can enjoy the activities taking place there.

Walkers can choose to do the first part of the walk only and get the free bus back to Locomotion.

The walk will start at 11am and is expected to finish by 2pm at the latest.

The second Railway Heritage walk is a shorter one (approximately 90 minutes) to the Brusselton Incline and back.

The walk starts at 10am and gives people the opportunity to talk to members of the Brussleton Incline Group about their efforts to protect and repair the Accommodation Bridge which is part of the original Stockton and Darlington Railway.

A spokesperson said: “Please come along and enjoy the walks. Remember to wear sensible shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather.
“The walks are suitable for most people.”
