An annual athletics event inspired by the 2012 Olympics took place in Shildon on Friday 7th August, for more than 200 adults with learning disabilities.
The event was organised by Innovations, a day care service with bases across County Durham, including Bishop Auckland and Shildon.
Participants from ten centres battled it out in a series of events, including sprinting, hurdles and long jump, at the Millennium Stadium at Sunnydale Leisure Centre.
People with all abilities were able to take part, with specially adapted equipment meaning that those in wheelchairs could also join in the fun.
The event was followed by a disco inside the Leisure Centre, where awards were handed out.
Hazel Kennedy, Innovations Development Officer commented, “It was a fantastic day and they thoroughly enjoyed it, and it did not matter if they hadn’t won because it’s the competing that gets them inspired.
“You are in awe watching them. We started off with a parade round the track and all the different centres had different banners and colours.”
