Independent Councillors Update

Cllr Liz Maddison provided an update on various activities in the area.

Festival Walk’s Cheapside end has now transferred to DCC, with plans to strip out the units starting in February and demolition to follow. A waste removal plan is in place. Demolition of the Library site is expected to conclude in late Spring, after which it will be actively marketed for sale.

On Sunday, January 28th, at 1 pm, Keiron Young of Walk & Talk Trust will initiate the Spennymoor H100 circular walk, inviting residents to meet at Jubilee Park by the H100 Post near the Sensory Garden and Clock.

The approximately five-mile route should take about two hours, and residents are advised to wear walking boots or hiking trainers due to some muddy sections. Keiron hopes for a strong turnout for the first of many accompanied walks created by H100 in County Durham, with funding and promotion support from local representatives.

Following the January County Council meeting, Cllr McAloon and I discussed concerns with a member of the DCC fly-tipping team.
Progress has been made in identifying individuals responsible for fly-tipping in the area.

Residents are urged to exercise caution when hiring ‘a man with a van’ for waste collection and to ensure responsible disposal, as residents share responsibility for waste management.

An ongoing campaign reminds residents to use registered waste carriers and request to see their waste carrying license.

Member funding will support the campaign to combat fly-tipping locally. Additionally, I had a brief conversation with Police Commissioner Joy Allen to discuss concerns regarding antisocial behaviour (ASB), off-road bicycles, and incidents involving stolen cars in the area.

Commissioner Allen has agreed to meet with them to further discuss these concerns.

DCC has recently introduced the Retail Start-Up Grant to support businesses in their first six months of operation.

This initiative is part of the Towns and Villages program and is funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The grant covers various costs, including rent, business rates, service charges, utilities, and insurance. For further details, visit help with business funding here.

Addressing concerns raised by residents about parking issues near road junctions, a consultation is underway and will close on 2 February.
The purpose is to seek authorisation for Road Traffic Restrictions at various locations.

Work is in progress on the speed visor for Oxford Road, funded through Neighbourhood funding, and highlighted Slow warning markings on Oxford Road have received support from myself and Cllrs Molloy and McAloon. The community is thanked for their patience during these highway improvements.
