The local Health Express held an event at Shildon Civic Hall on Friday 20th February, to showcase the Health Initiative.
A number of key speakers including Anna Lynch, Director of Public Health County Durham, Dr Shelina Visram from Durham University and Gordon Elliott, Chair of the Health Express Steering Group, as well as the Rt. Hon Lord Foster of Bishop Auckland and Lord Hunt of Kings Heath, Shadow Minister of State for Health, all spoke on the importance of health and the excellent work that is happening in Shildon.
The event also provided local people with the opportunity to take part in a range of workshops delivered by college staff and students, including exercise to music, mini-golf, head and shoulder massage and mini manicures. The Shildon Health Trainers, livin and ‘Check for Life’ & ‘WOW’ (Wellness on Wheels) buses were also on hand to provide advice and guidance on a range of health initiatives available in the area.
The event also launched a new partnership between the Health Express, Bishop Auckland College and livin. The aim of the partnership is to bring together local organisations to support people of all ages in becoming more active and to be more conscious of their lifestyle, diet and fitness.
The Health Express will provide ongoing opportunities for Bishop Auckland College students to actively get involved with the local community and to gain valuable practical experience with their chosen sport or health related subjects.
