The Mayor’s Award for September was presented by Town Mayor, Councillor Shirley Quinn to Hazel Johnson.
Hazel has been stewardess of the Railway Institute for many years, working there as a barmaid from a young age. She is highly regarded by all customers at the Railway Institute and her staff say that she is the best boss that anyone could ask for.
Hazel organises events for the whole community, including Christmas parties, Halloween parties, and day trips to the coast, always going the extra mile. She decided to take up running several years ago and has completed many Great North Runs as well as marathons, raising money for local charities.
During the first lockdown, she, along with members of the Shildon Running and Athletics Club, ran from Shildon to Seaham to raise money for the Save our Stute fund and the following year she raised money for a community defibrillator for New Shildon, running a mile every hour for 24 hours. She always puts everyone else first and is one in a million.
“Thank you for everything that you have done and will continue to do,” said Mayor Quinn.
