Families in Woodhouse Close are invited to “The BIG picnic” Saturday, March 20th.
Organised by Groundwork North East, Woodhouse Close Children’s Centre and Auckland Youth and Community Centre play workers, the morning will be devoted to activities and food-making for all the family.
Starting at 10.00am at the Woodhouse Close Children’s Centre, Emma Kerr from Continyou, which runs ‘What’s Cooking Kids’ will be demonstrating how to make healthy packed lunches which will then be taken up to green space near Cheesmond Avenue where the picnic will take place, with activities such as plant pot painting, story telling, art activities and a nature trail.
The picnic is part of the Pride Project, which aims to encourage people to take pride in their local environment and be involved in their community. The project is financially supported by the Stronger Safer Communities Fund and Durham Constabulary’s Basic Command Unit Fund.
Joanne Morley, Project Officer at Groundwork, said, ‘The activities organised are suitable for all the family and we hope parents, children and grandparents will come along and take part in some fun activities and go home with a few ideas for their own family activities.
“The area where the picnic is being held has been the focus of some improvements led by young people who planted daffodil bulbs in the autumn, and it is hoped visitors on Saturday will be filled with a sense of Spring at the sight of blooming daffodils.”
The event will run until 1.00pm and children under eight must be accompanied by an adult.
In the event of poor weather, the event will still go ahead, with all the activities being transferred to the Auckland Youth and Community Centre.
