Victoria Jubilee Junior parkrun is a free, weekly 2km event for children aged 4–14, held every Sunday morning at 9am in Victoria Jubilee Park, Spennymoor. It is part of the national parkrun movement and is entirely organised and delivered by local volunteers.
The event is inclusive and non-competitive, with children able to run, jog or walk the course at their own pace. All participants register once with parkrun and bring a personal barcode to receive an official result.
This coming Sunday’s event is particularly special, as it will mark Victoria Jubilee Junior parkrun’s first birthday, as well as being the 50th event since launching. The team is encouraging as many local juniors as possible to come along and take part in the celebrations, whether they are regular attendees or trying junior parkrun for the first time.
Since launching, Victoria Jubilee Junior parkrun has become a well-established part of the local community, offering families a regular opportunity to be active together in a safe, friendly and supportive environment.
Key statistics:
• Events held: 49 (this Sunday will be the 50th)
• Individual children who have taken part: 371
• Total finishes: 2,183
• Number of volunteers involved: 106
• Personal bests recorded: 476
• Average finish time: 13 minutes 20 seconds
The event relies heavily on volunteers, with roles ranging from marshals and timekeepers to barcode scanners and tail walkers. New volunteers are always welcome, and no prior experience is required.
Victoria Jubilee Junior parkrun is free to attend, open to all abilities, and continues to grow as a positive, community-led activity for local children and families. The upcoming birthday and milestone event provides a great opportunity for new juniors to get involved.
Matthew Gale says – “As Event Director, I couldn’t be prouder of what we have achieved as a team in our first year. To have already welcomed over 370 different children to the event is a magnificent achievement. This is a massive team effort and we are lucky to be supported by wonderful volunteers, many of whom have been to the majority of our events, selflessly giving up their mornings to make sure these events can happen.
“I want to thank the volunteers, the participating juniors and their accompanying adults for a fantastic first year at our parkrun. We hope to welcome more juniors in our second year”
