On Saturday 14th February Bishop Auckland Golf Team played hosts to Billingham in the 1st Round of the National Daily Mail team Classic.
The weather was cool and overcast but remained dry for the duration of the matches, with Peter Moralee the club champion teeing off 1st.
In a tough encounter Moralee lost 2 down. Next up was Chris Thompson who soon levelled the score with a brilliant 6&5 victory. In match 3, Matt Tyrie lost 4&3 which left the way for Mark Walker and Jamie Birkbeck to save the day and both responded.
Mark Walker was 1 down on the 17th hole but hit the shot of the day 170 yards to 2 feet away with the resulting birdie levelling the match. This match concluded on the 18th all square. A fantastic effort from Walker.
In the final deciding match +1 handicap golfer Jamie Birkbeck won his match comfortably 4&3 and went on to win the match overall for Bishops at the 4th extra hole.
This was a tough early season encounter but Bishops progress to Round 2 with the match all square – but Bishops winning 4 extra holes.
