Mayor of Ferryhill, Councillor John Lindsay was pleased to present a lovely bouquet of flowers and a whisky tumbler on behalf of Ferryhill Town Council to Brian and Valerie McGill, who celebrated 50 years of marriage.
They were married on 30th September 1967 at All Saints, Dean Road, Ferryhill.
Brian and Valerie met at the Broom when they were 14 years old and were engaged when they were 18 years old. They lived in Croft Gardens, Ferryhill Station for 26 years then moved to their current home in George Street and have lived there for 24 years.
They have one son, Mervyn and his partner, Stacy and three grandsons, Luke, Jordan and Keiron.
Brian served his apprenticeship at GW Lazenby in Ferryhill Station as a joiner, then worked all over the country in the building trade.
Valerie started work in Speddings Chemist at Ferryhill Station then went on to work in the offices at Smart & Browns, Spennymoor, leaving to start a family. Five years later, Valerie returned to work, firstly in the Accounts Department at Tomado’s in Spennymoor then on to JP Halls Solicitors at Spennymoor until they closed. The couple enjoy going out for a drink and socialising, gardening and travelling around England on holiday 4 to 5 times a year.
They celebrated their special anniversary with a holiday to Blackpool with close family and a holiday in Scarborough with friends.
