A massive home improvements programme covering Durham County Council owned houses will press ahead following confirmation that the Government funds required to support the scheme over the next two years have been confirmed.
The council’s Cabinet member for housing, Cllr Clive Robson, announced that DCLG has formalised the £38m the council hoped to receive to address a backlog of home improvements in some houses in the county. Together with the council’s own investment the confirmation means that the authority will now plough more than £92m into those homes that are prioritised for decent homes improvements over the next two years.
Welcoming the funds Cllr Robson said, “This is fantastic news for the thousands of people living in our houses, particularly the many families in those houses which still do not meet decent homes standards.
“I am absolutely delighted that we can continue to deliver our huge programme of works transforming our housing stock and improving the lives of so many people significantly.
“When combined with Durham County Council’s own investment programme this is a vast sum of money and it is particularly pleasing that we can move ahead with this in such difficult financial times. In 2011/12 Durham County Council and DCLG backlog funding saw the following improvements in the council’s housing stock:
1,865 new kitchens
1,850 new bathrooms
2,667 new heating systems and boilers
