Medium Debra Chalmers is helping raise £4,000 to create a sensory garden for people with autism.
Creative Support runs a supported living scheme for adults with autism in Tudhoe. The house has a good-sized plot of garden but a large area is currently inaccessible to the five people who live there.
The garden will be used to help teach tenants new skills like looking after chickens and growing vegetables and staff have already started work on a chicken coop and a vegetable patch.
There are still remnants of a well-cared for garden with traditional borders and staff would love to return it to its former glory for the residents to enjoy.
But as support worker Brian Rendell says, they need help: “We have big plans for raised beds, a water feature and a large sensory area. We have lots of ideas but really need some help to put them into practice.”
Now Debra has stepped in and agreed to donate half the proceeds from a night of mediumship to the garden fund.
The event will take place at the Settlement Everyman Theatre between 7pm and 10pm on Tuesday 9th April. Tickets for the event are £10.
Staff are also organising a night of live music with Laura Cairns, a disco and a pie and pea supper at Spennymoor Working Men’s club between 7pm and 10pm on 5th April. Tickets are £5.
