A group of enthusiastic Shildon AFC fans undertook the challenging feat of walking from Britain’s highest pub all the way back to Shildon on Sunday 24th August.
Norman Smith (also a club director), Wilf Tray, Amanda Scaife, Keith Robson, Steve Morell and Tom Clegg embarked from the Tan Hill Inn at Swaledale – and hiked all the way back to Dean Street; just a small matter of 28 miles!
The group set off from the pub at 5.20am and trekked along country roads and fields to make their way back to their home town, arriving in Shildon 11 hours later at 4.20pm, when they enjoyed a well-deserved pint in the Clubhouse.
They made the walk to raise funds for the football club, as well as for their chosen charities; Cancer Research, Macmillan, CLIC Sargent and the Blood Bikers.
Over £1,000 has already been raised from the fundraiser, with donations still coming in.
One of the walkers, Tom Clegg commented, “We would like to thank everyone involved in organising the walk, the walkers who took part and everyone who sponsored us.”
Special mention was also made of Hays Travel Bishop Auckland Branch, who kindly donated a generous £50 to the cause.
