On St George’s Day, Saturday 23 April, a fundraising event is being held at the Wheatsheaf public house in Chilton.
Swing, soul, jazz and easy singer, Vicky Sandison will be performing from 4pm.
All funds raised will be donated to the cost of adding the names of the twenty men from Windlestone Colliery (open 1877-1924) who died whilst fighting in the First World War to the memorial at the Aged Miners bungalows on Durham Road.
The 91 men from Chilton Colliery (open 1872- 1966) are remembered on the memorial, but sadly the men from Windlestone Colliery have been forgotten.
The council and community have agreed to add the names of the men from Windlestone Colliery to those of
Chilton Colliery and all the money raised will go towards this.
Just as with the Chilton and Windlestone Remembrance Garden, which was unveiled last year, all the funding will come from the community rather than the council.
It is hoped to unveil the memorial on 9 July, which is the date of this year’s Durham Miner’s Gala.
