The Humble Garden CIC, a new community interest company, has launched a community garden dedicated to fostering sustainability, wellbeing and social connection in the heart of the town.
Located at East End Allotments, The Humble Garden CIC aims to be a vibrant community hub where residents of all ages can get together to grow food, share knowledge, and participate in a wide range of educational and social activities.
Founder, Lucille Bowling said: “During lockdown my garden was a magical space which increased my love of gardening. Not everyone has access to an outdoor space or the time to maintain an allotment.
“My mission is to create a space where everyone in our community feels welcome and empowered to contribute.”
“Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just getting started, The Humble Garden is a place to learn, grow, and connect with others.
“Gardening has the power to improve physical and mental health, and I’m excited to creative a space that the local community can access and benefit from.”
The Humble Garden CIC will host regular workshops on topics such as organic gardening, composting, and sustainable living, as well as seasonal events like wreath making and plant and seed swaps. The garden will also provide opportunities for local schools and organisations to engage in hands-on environmental education.
In addition to its focus on community building and education, The Humble Garden CIC is committed to environmental stewardship.
The garden employs sustainable practices such as rainwater harvesting, composting, and the use of organic fertilisers, and is working towards becoming a zero-waste facility.
“We want to be a model for sustainable living in our community,” said Lucille.
“By demonstrating how small actions can lead to big changes, we hope to inspire others to live more sustainably.”
The Humble Garden is inviting everyone in the community to get involved.
Whether you’re interested in volunteering, attending a workshop, or simply enjoying the garden, there are many ways to participate and contribute to this growing community.
The first event, a seed sowing workshop will be held on Thursday 3 October at 7pm at Ferryhill Sports and Education Centre.
“The workshop is priced at £6 and everything needed is provided, along with a goodie bag worth over £10.
“There has been lots of support from gardening companies who are equally excited about the project as I am,” enthused Lucille. “Huge thanks to PlantGrow who have provided some wonderful pieces for the goodie bags.”
