West Cornforth & Ferryhill Battle of Passchendaele Remembrance Service will take place on Sunday 29th October from 7pm at Cornforth Church Hall.
Over eight months ago, the congregations of Holy Trinity, Cornforth and St Luke’s Ferryhill, came together with the wider community in the two villages, as well as people from across County Durham, to accomplish something truly extraordinary; Field of Poppies.
The installation is 8 metres high, 6 metres wide and covered in 19,240 hand-crafted poppies, each representing a life lost in the Great War.
Field of Poppies is on display outside Cornforth Church Hall on Vicarage Road, West Cornforth, until 13th November.
Now the community is coming together once again to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele.
On 29th October, for one night only, Field of Poppies will be floodlit and, in tribute, Piper Steve Wright will play and lead community singing as prayers for peace and thanksgiving are offered.
“All are welcome to join us on this memorable occasion,” said a spokesperson.
