Ferryhill’s Home Guard remembered

We were recently sent this photo of the Home Guard in the early 40s by Francis Barnish.

“I would have thought this would have been a rare photo and of some interest due to the number of people and presumably these would all have been from Ferryhill area,” said Francis.

“Anyone who knows of someone in the Home Guard may have a relative in the photo.

“There’s no real story to accompany this,” added Francis, “but the guy at the top on the extreme left is Eddie White, father of Mrs Margaret Shepherd, who is still with us at 87. She apparently remembers him having his gun in the cupboard and she was scared every time he got it out. Not sure that he had bullets or whether they would have been issued only if there was a real threat.

“I hope this is of interest in the week of Armistice Day.”
