On Thursday 8 May, Ferryhill Town Council joined hundreds of organisations around the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories to take part in a National Beacon Lighting Ceremony in the town hall garden, where Councillor Carol Atkinson (outgoing Mayor of Ferryhill) lit the beacon and read out the Official VE Day 80 Proclamation and International Tribute.
A special thank you to Interim Change Minister, Lindsay Southern of St Luke’s Church, for delivering a blessing and prayers, ex N.C.O. Andy Denholm, 15th/19th The Kings Royal Hussars, for raising the VE Day 80 International Flag of Peace, Adam Jenkins for playing ‘When The Battle’s Over’ on the bagpipes and to Ferryhill Station Royal British Legion Standard Bearer, Robert Grey.
Ferryhill Town Council would also like to say a huge thank you to residents who attended the Beacon Lighting Ceremony and who joined councillors and staff afterwards to enjoy refreshments and to watch a recording of the VE Day 60 Commemorations produced 20 years ago.
It was great to see such a large turnout at the event.
A big thank you also goes to the volunteers, who adorned the town hall and other premises in the town centre with bunting in preparation of the VE Day 80 celebrations, and to residents and organisations, who organised their own individual celebration events.
