On Saturday 13 May, Ferryhill Miners United U16s played host to Lisa Chaytor FC, a team of adults from the local community, for the annual Lisa Chaytor Memorial Cup.
From start to finish the event was a massive success, with a huge crowd in attendance, passionate organisers and committed players for both sides. All were there to support the club and Lisa’s memory through the game she loved most. “The atmosphere was fantastic and it was genuinely heartwarming to see such support from community on a day that is so important to our club,” said a club spokesperson.
As for the game, despite the experience of the adults – whose ages ranged from 22 to 62 – the young side were victorious on the day and won the cup for the second consecutive year. And what an entertaining game it was, resulting in an 11-goal thriller with drama, hilarity and footballing genius all on display. An Owen Wilkinson and Marshall Metcalfe brace along with goals from Clarke Lightfoot and Kyle Outhwaite saw the youths find the net six times. But the more ‘experienced’ XI were only able to score five, with Stephen Ward, David Wearmouth, Scott Hunter, Michael Lee Toas and a sympathetic own goal making up their total.
Players of the match decided by each team were Dillon Chaytor (Youth) and Stephen Ward (Adults).
Ferryhill Miners and the Chaytor family would like to thank everyone for their donations and support on the day. “It is greatly appreciated,” added the spokesperson, “and the Lisa Chaytor Cup will continue to return every year around this date to raise money for charity and local youth football, but also to remember an amazing woman. Thank you to all who were a part of this special day. In total we collectively raised £900 for Ferryhill Miners United and Cancer Research UK.
