Ferryhill Athletic made hard work of their final home game, with a 5-2 victory over local rivals Coxhoe Athletic at Dean Bank, reports Chris Orton.
It took the home side a while to get going and Coxhoe were a much better opposition than the team that Ferryhill faced away a couple of weeks ago, with their striker Sutherland a particularly tricky threat. He scored first, taking the lead for the away team following a contentious free-kick.
Ferryhill didn’t take long to get back on level terms with super striker Kieron Richardson firing home. Alex Quinn went close next, but it was Coxhoe who went ahead again with Sutherland doubling his tally. Ferryhill kept pressing but were unable to equalise with Quinn shooting over the bar and Coxhoe going into the break 2-1 up.
The second half was a much better affair for Ferryhill who had numerous chances on goal. Joe Wilson had a very good game, almost scoring after crossing from the wing. Matthew Agar had a couple of attempts that were denied by the Coxhoe defence. Adam Morland hit the post just before Richardson got his second to put Ferryhill ahead. Coxhoe appeared to run out of steam by this point and Ferryhill took full control. A terrific spell by substitute Chris Devine saw him score a clinical goal near the end of the game, before doubling his tally a couple of minutes later.
Ferryhill remain fourth in the table after second-placed West Auckland defeated the league winners Hetton Juniors 4-0.
Athletic’s next game is against New Durham AFC at Bowburn Park on 1 May, with a 7.00pm kick-off, before facing league champions Hetton Juniors in the final league game on 4th May at South Hetton.
Athletic host the final of the Clem Smith Bowl at Dean Bank on 15th May, where they will face Durham City. Kick-off 6.45pm.
